The cover letter is often overlooked, but it’s
considered an essential part of the job application
process. Many people underestimate its
importance. We all know the power of a wellwritten
resume, but a great accompaniment to
that resume can be a well-written cover letter.
Many people shy away from cover letters,
stating they don’t like to write, but a cover
letter can quite literally make or break your
interview chances. What should you include?
Remember, the cover letter is your chance to introduce yourself and your skills. It helps bring your resume to life! So, before you write your first word, take the position’s job description you are applying to and circle the skills they are looking for. Search for ways that you can contribute in the position. If the company requires someone to know HTML or Photoshop and you know both of those programs, then you have two vital skills for this position. Let’s say the company is looking for a background in customer service. Utilize that part-time position at the Gap to illustrate your customer service skills.
Once you’ve created a list of your skills and how they relate to the position, you’re ready to begin. Remember you are trying to sell yourself as the best-qualified candidate. Start by informing the employer how you found out about the position, where you attend college and your major.
The second paragraph is where you marry the position requirements with your skills and illustrate why you are excited to apply for the position. Finally, close by thanking the readers for their time and by stating that you look forward to hearing from them. The letter shouldn’t be more than four paragraphs.
If you get stuck in the midst of writing a cover letter, a few resources are available. First, Career Services can offer suggestions and advice. The library at the college also offers a large selection of career books to help you prepare for the job search process. The Internet also provides a variety of resources for writing a great cover letter; just use Google to search cover letters.
